# Fix Common SillyTavern Errors

> Quick fixes for the SillyTavern problems people hit most, from Too Many Requests to Termux and update errors.

Find your error below. Most of them come from the AI provider, from SillyTavern not running, or from an update.

## Too Many Requests (429)

You've hit your AI provider's limit. It happens most with free Gemini keys.

1. Wait. Per-minute limits reset within a minute, daily ones the next day.
2. In the **sliders icon** (AI Response Configuration), lower **Context Size** to about 100,000 to 200,000 tokens, or less. Each message sends the whole context, so a huge one uses up limits fast.
3. Lower **Max Response Length** to about 2,000.
4. Check your key in [Google AI Studio](https://aistudio.google.com/apikey) for key or billing problems.
5. Switch to another provider for a while, such as an [OpenRouter model](/articles/connect-sillytavern-ai).

To use a new key, paste it under the **plug icon** and click **Connect**. SillyTavern saves it.

## Empty or blocked replies

The provider's safety filter stopped the reply, or the provider is down. Swipe or click **Regenerate**, reword your message, or try another model. If Google or OpenRouter is down, you'll have to wait.

## 127.0.0.1:8000 won't open

SillyTavern isn't running.

- On Android, open Termux and run `cd ~/SillyTavern && bash start.sh`.
- On Windows, double-click **Start.bat** and keep its window open.
- Type the address as `http://127.0.0.1:8000`, with `http`, not `https`.

## SillyTavern keeps stopping on Android

Android closes background apps to save battery. Pull down the Termux notification and tap **Acquire wakelock**, and turn off battery optimization for Termux.

## Termux: curl or bash not found

```bash
pkg update && pkg install -y curl bash
```

Then run the installer again.

## Termux: "Unable to locate package"

Your package mirror is out of date. Pick another one:

```bash
termux-change-repo
```

If it still fails, make sure Termux came from [F-Droid](https://f-droid.org/en/packages/com.termux/) and not the Play Store.

## Update fails: "local changes would be overwritten"

Set the changed files aside, then update:

```bash
cd ~/SillyTavern && git stash && git pull && bash start.sh
```

On a computer, run `git stash && git pull` inside the SillyTavern folder. Your chats in `data/` aren't affected.

## Won't start after an update

Reinstall and keep a backup of the old folder.

On Android, the installer's `--fresh` option moves your old folder to `SillyTavern_backup_<date>` and installs again:

```bash
curl -fsSL https://rolezy.com/sillytavern/install.sh | bash -s -- --fresh
```

On a computer, rename `SillyTavern` to `SillyTavern-old`, [install again](/articles/install-sillytavern-windows), and copy `SillyTavern-old/data/default-user` into the new `SillyTavern/data/`.

## "Node.js version too old"

Install the current LTS from [nodejs.org](https://nodejs.org/). On Android, run `pkg upgrade`, or run the Rolezy installer again.

## Still stuck?

Post a screenshot of the error in the [SillyTavern TH Discord](https://discord.gg/sgVPM2du6m), with your device and the guide you followed. If you'd rather not deal with installs at all, [Rolezy Plus](https://plus.rolezy.com/) runs and updates SillyTavern for you.
